OUT
OF TIME (DISSOCIATED)
_
I’m all too often accused of using terms that
are ‘beyond’ normal understanding. Sometimes this is unavoidable. Some readers
of Beat Depression have commented on
its “academic” feel – and this, after much effort on my part to make the writing
accessible and understandable. In the case of the overall and most important
step in your process, a phrase “Growing Up Your Depression Belief Script”
seems to me to be a little infantile, and I would prefer its correct
terminology: “temporal re-association**” or "temporal emotional reframing." But the term “Growing Up” is nonetheless
valid.
_
**Temporal
= ‘relating to time’; re-association = ‘to rebuild the connection in the mind’.
_
In neuropsychology, and in particular in the realm of the
unconscious, it is enough to say that there is a mood-generating part of the
subconscious mind that is operating from the perspective of what USED to work for you, and was learned
and developed in a time past – perhaps in
a time long past.
The pages of this site "What's Your Engine" (5 parts/pages) contain the text of my eBook of the same name. I would hope that you can avail yourself of those page contents to be able to fully understand the importance of acknowledging the "Spark at the Beginning." I offer this below as a summary (albeit very brief) of the process of how the affect core mind "starts its journey." Those who have read "Engine" would recognize this below as being familiar. .1. Emotional learning “happens” when a reaction to any unpleasant situation “works for you” at the time of the learning.
_
.2. No matter what this “works for you” means –
for instance, ‘getting attention’ or ‘getting re-comforted’ – it becomes a
learning at subconscious level.
.3. This forms a template by which there is an automatic repetition whenever you next experience discomfort. You react with the same feeling in the same way, because it ‘worked for you before.’
.4. This repetition (or perseveration) continues and becomes locked in to our way of reacting to the world around us on a general basis
_
.5. The world changes over time. Our experiences create changes to circumstance that render initial discomforts no longer valid in our lives.
.6. Yet we continue to react and build emotion and mood states based on much earlier learnings
_
This
means that we are unconsciously and automatically driving mood states from the
perspective of what USED TO work for us, but works no longer in real-time.
We are “split off” from earlier learnings in our conscious awareness, but held back in time by our unconscious repetitive habits – our subconscious emotional script – our amygdala script. Understanding this cascade of emotion learning is an important component toward an eventual unconscious realization of the temporal dissociation that might very well be driving all and any of your emotional reactions or status in life – and of course, depression and many mental-emotional issues fall squarely within that model. |
